This is also a resource for creators interested in producing innovative, artistic works outside of conventional copyright licensing \u2014 namely remix culture and transformative works.<br \/>\n<!--more-->This post also has some overlap with <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/12\/how-to-determine-fair-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fair use<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2016\/04\/16\/media-dmca-drm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DMCA\/DRM<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/12\/open-access-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open access<\/a>, so check out those as well.<\/p>\n<h2>Articles &amp; guides<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmsimpact.org\/fair-use\/best-practices\/code-best-practices-fair-use-online-video\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video<\/a> (June 2008), prepared by CMSI, offers guidelines to creators to make licensing and obtaining permissions clear for users.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/comicsworthreading.com\/2018\/03\/10\/copyright-creative-rights-and-comics-a-brief-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copyright, Creative Rights, and Comics: A Brief History<\/a> (March 2018), a presentation by comics blogger Johanna Draper Carlson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/copy-me.org\/2018\/02\/the-creativity-delusion-there-is-no-genius\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creativity Delusion: There Is No Genius<\/a> (February 2018) is a pointed video that breaks down the misleading notion that great ideas come suddenly and to only a select few. In other words, while there might be rare moments of inspiration, most works require much time, effort, and experimentation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/vTLQ4h4yKSk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Everything is a Remix: Fair Use<\/a> (September 2017), a video by Kirby Ferguson, describes how you can reuse copyrighted material within the bounds of fair use \u2014 i.e., for the purpose of commentary, parody, or criticism.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/websearch.about.com\/od\/booksandprintedmaterials\/ss\/Free-Audio-Books-The-Top-Eight-Websites.htm#showall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Audio Books: Top 8 Websites<\/a>, from About.com \u2014 some are in the public domain, some are DRM-free.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imore.com\/how-dispute-copyright-claim-youtube\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to dispute a copyright claim on YouTube<\/a> (J.L. Carlson, 6 November 2015) offers a step-by-step guide for when &#8220;YouTube erroneously thinks you don&#8217;t have rights to the music you&#8217;re using.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/2017\/10\/11\/termination-of-transfer-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Landmark release<\/a> (D. Peters, 11 October 2017) of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rightsback.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Termination of Transfer tool<\/a> from Creative Commons and Authors Alliance lets creators \u2014 authors, artists, musicians, photographers, videographers, etc. \u2014 reclaim copyrights from publishers, studios, and so forth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmediarights.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Media Rights<\/a> is a non-profit project to educate both creators and Internet users on licensing. The offer the online <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newmediarights.org\/fairuse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Use App<\/a> aimed specifically to guide filmmakers and video artists in understanding licensing, copyright, and fair usage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/arstechnica.com\/staff\/2013\/07\/why-drm-free-comic-books-are-a-big-deal-even-if-you-dont-read-comics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why DRM-free comic books are a big deal, even if you don\u2019t read comics<\/a> (A. Lawson, 3 July 2013), or &#8220;When publishers address piracy like rational human beings, we all win.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Finding public domain works<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ithacalibrary.com\/sp\/subjects\/pubdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ithaca College Library<\/a> has a great guide to public domain works for audio, music, scores, images, film, and books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.lib.umt.edu\/c.php?g=275362&amp;p=1836631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Montana<\/a> also has an excellent pathfinder for public domain items for many media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Audiobooks<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/librivox.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LibriVox<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Books<\/strong>: 39% of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hathitrust.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HathiTrust&#8217;s<\/a> content is under public domain; licensing state is noted under <em>Viewability<\/em> in their catalog. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Project Gutenberg<\/a> has one of the largest repositories of public domain ebooks, available in multiple formats, too. For persons with <em>print disabilities<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookshare.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bookshare<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningally.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Learning Ally<\/a> offer ebooks, audiobooks, and Braille books.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comics<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcomicmuseum.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Comics Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/comicbookplus.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Comic Book Plus<\/a> offer many public domain Golden and Silver Age comics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Film &amp; video<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/prelinger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prelinger Archives<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Images &amp; photography<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Public_Domain_Images_from_the_New_York_Times\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a> Wikimedia collection; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/smithsonian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smithsonian Institution<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sheet music<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicdomainsherpa.com\/free-sheet-music.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Domain Sherpa<\/a> lists many sources<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vector-based art<\/strong>, including <strong>SVG<\/strong> files:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/publicdomainvectors.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Public Domain Vectors<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Alternative, openly licensed works for free<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/search.creativecommons.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Commons Search<\/a>: Although not a search engine, this tool\u00a0offers a one-stop place to search for CC-licensed content, based on media and organization (Wikimedia, Google, YouTube, etc.).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dig.ccmixter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dig.ccMixter<\/a> provides CC-licensed <strong>music<\/strong> to use in videos, games, and even commercials that you or your organization create.<\/p>\n<p>Eezy.com provides repositories for both creators and users to upload and download CC-licensed works, respectively: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vecteezy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vecteezy<\/a> for <strong>vector art<\/strong>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brusheezy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brusheezy<\/a> for <strong>Photoshop brush styles<\/strong>;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.videezy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Videezy<\/a> for high-definition <strong>stock footage<\/strong> and <strong>videos<\/strong>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themezy.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Themezy<\/a> for website and email <strong>templates<\/strong>, including <strong>WordPress themes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/freemusicarchive.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Music Archive<\/a> offers CC-licensed <strong>music<\/strong>, under the direction of public radio station <a href=\"http:\/\/wfmu.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WFMU<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getty.edu\/publications\/virtuallibrary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Getty Museum<\/a> offers <strong>art books<\/strong> to download\u00a0for free, fair use by students, educators, and researchers.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Cultural Institute<\/a>\u00a0has digital\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/collections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collections<\/a>\u00a0whose <strong>images<\/strong> are\u00a0either copyright-free or copyright-cleared. You can virtually explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/browse\/?c.projectId=art-project&amp;v.view=room&amp;v.filter=items&amp;projectId=art-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">many well-known <strong>museums<\/strong><\/a>, world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/project\/world-wonders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>heritage sites<\/strong> with maps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/browse\/?projectId=performing-arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>performing arts<\/strong>\u00a0pieces<\/a>, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The venerable\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Internet Archive<\/a> has many free items across media types, including text, images, audio, video, software, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/museo.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Museo<\/a> is a federated (multisite) search engine that finds images from <strong>museums<\/strong> around the world. Institutions include the Rijksmuseum, the Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard University&#8217;s Art Museums, the New York Public Library Digital Collection, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art \u2014 along with plans to add more museums.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/thenounproject.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Noun Project<\/a> offers CC-licensed as well as public domain <strong>icons<\/strong> you can use.<\/p>\n<p>Under the\u00a0Open Access for Scholarly Content (OASC) initiative, free digital access to much <strong>artwork<\/strong> is available from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a> (NYC), including their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metmuseum.org\/collection\/the-collection-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online collection<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/images.nga.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Gallery of Art<\/a> (Washington, DC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Culture<\/a> offers a vast array of free cultural (especially arts and humanities) resources for education and research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/openmusiclibrary.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Open Music Library<\/a> provides open access to journal articles, music scores, and books on music \u2014 developed by <a href=\"http:\/\/alexanderstreet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Street Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/podiobooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Podiobooks<\/a> offers books as serialized, CC-licensed <strong>audiobooks<\/strong>, in a podcast-like manner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/search\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.myaudiobooklibrary.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">My Audiobook Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Comics<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.comixology.com\/DRM-Free-Comics\/page\/2794\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ComiXology<\/a>, one of the largest digital comics vendors, offers some DRM-free titles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ebooks<\/strong>:\u00a0More and more publishers and online bookstores are offering DRM-free ebooks! <a href=\"http:\/\/shop.oreilly.com\/category\/ebooks.do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Safari<\/a> tech books, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smashwords.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smashwords<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/bookviewcafe.com\/bookstore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Book View Caf\u00e9<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/weightlessbooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Weightless Books<\/a>, even the Tor imprint of MacMillan, one of the Big 5 publishers. For a comprehensive listing, see Defective by Design&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defectivebydesign.org\/guide\/ebooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide to DRM-free Living: Literature<\/a>, as well as Kevin Boynton&#8217;s list of <a href=\"http:\/\/kevinbeynon.com\/drmfreebookshops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DRM-free E-Bookshops (and comics vendors)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Music<\/strong>: Both Apple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iTunes<\/a> and Amazon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Ddigital-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Music<\/a> sell music without DRM. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emusic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eMusic<\/a> offers DRM-free music as a subscription service.<\/p>\n<h2>\u0003Creating\u00a0works through OA or alternative licensing<\/h2>\n<p>The Open Access article has resources still applicable to transformative works (including remixes), such as <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.creativecommons.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Creative Commons<\/a>. However, as an alternative to CC,\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/copyleft.org\/guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Copyleft Guide<\/a> discusses the background\u00a0and uses for their licensing, including the\u00a0history\u00a0the GNU General Public License (GPL).<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, there are many\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Comparison_of_free_and_open-source_software_licenses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">free and open-source licenses<\/a>\u00a0to select from, especially with regards to software.<\/p>\n<h3>Ebooks<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/janefriedman.com\/how-to-publish-an-ebook\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How to Publish an E-Book: Resources for Authors<\/a> (J. Friedman, 28 October 2015) offers resources for creating and distributing your own ebooks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/davidgaughran.wordpress.com\/basics\/practicalities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Let&#8217;s Get Digital: How to Self-Publish and Why You Should<\/em><\/a> (2nd edition, 2014) is website for David Gaughran&#8217;s eponymous book of self-publishing.<\/p>\n<h3>3D printing &amp; models<\/h3>\n<p>Maker spaces are becoming popular at libraries, as well as for research, education, and fun! Not all the resources will be 100% OA, public domain, or for free, but they are good places to start learning and searching \u2014 it&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.evilmadscientist.com\/2015\/thoughts-on-oshw-and-oshw-certification\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new area subject to dispute<\/a> (W. Oskay, 22 September 2015). Read the respective terms of use (copyright) for\u00a0hardware\/software makers, as well as printing services,\u00a0for details.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/3dprintingforbeginners.com\/3d-model-repositories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D Model Repositories<\/a> list collections of 3D plans, including file types and availability, e.g., CC, GPL, paid, etc.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kb.ucla.edu\/articles\/3d-printing-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3D Printing Resources<\/a>, a subject guide from\u00a0the UCLA Knowledge Base.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.educause.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/library\/presentations\/E15\/PS41\/RP_Poster_Sustainable_3DPrinting.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lessons Learned Creating Sustainable, Deployable, Open-access 3D Printing Services<\/a> (PDF), by Eric Maslowski at the University of Michigan Library.<\/p>\n<p><em>Make: Ultimate Guide to 3D Printing 2014<\/em> (M. Frauenfelder, 2013, O&#8217;Reilly Books\/Maker Media; updated annually) offers thorough reviews of printers, scanners, extruders, and controller software. Some open source printer manufacturers are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ultimaker.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimaker<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reach3dprinters.com\/TheReachPrinter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reach<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kosselpro.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kossel Pro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.makerbot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MakerBot<\/a>, a commercial firm,\u00a0builds 3D printers and offers a searchable community,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thingiverse<\/a>; they encourage makers to make their 3D designs available through CC. MakerBot&#8217;s intellectual property (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.makerbot.com\/legal\/terms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">terms of service<\/a>) extends to their services and patents, and end-user license agreements (e.g., EULA on the printers they sell; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makerbot.com\/legal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">legal details<\/a>). <strong>N.B.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2012\/05\/3-d-printing-patent-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MakerBot&#8217;s hardware has become closed-source<\/a>\u00a0(C. Thompson, 30 May 2012), while some of the software and Thingiverse collaborations remain primarily open-source (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MakerBot_Industries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wikipedia)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shapeways.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shapeways<\/a> is another commercial firm, except they focus on providing 3D printing services for uploaded models and designs with a wide range of physical media (plastic, metal, etc.).
