Smith&#8217;s<\/a> articles on <em>Library Journal<\/em> offer thoughtful perspectives on copyright in libraries.<\/p>\n<p>Follow Duke&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DukeCSPD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Domain Center<\/a> on Twitter for the latest news around the world and in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Minow, IP lawyer, former librarian and instructor at the San Jos\u00e9 State University MLIS program, writes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.librarylaw.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LibraryLaw<\/a> blog as well as the Stanford University Libraries&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/fairuse.stanford.edu\/author\/maryminow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fairly Used<\/a> blog.<\/p>\n<p>QuestionCopyright (more under <strong>Advocacy organizations<\/strong>) posts copyright news on their <a href=\"http:\/\/questioncopyright.org\/news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> and via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/qco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReadersRights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Readers&#8217; Bill of Rights<\/a> are a group of activists and librarians against DRM on Twitter.<\/p>\n<h2>Academic resources<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/copyright.columbia.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyright Advisory Office at Columbia University Libraries<\/a> includes advice and articles on how intellectual property affects academia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fairuse.stanford.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyright &amp; Fair Use by the Stanford University Libraries<\/a> is one of the foremost sites containing tools, readable introductions and policy descriptions, permissions tips, and research in the field<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cyberlaw.stanford.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CyberLaw: Center for Internet &amp; Society<\/a> at Stanford Law School broadly covers policies on the Internet and emerging technologies (intellectual freedom, privacy, and intellectual property).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Culture<\/a>\u00a0offers a vast array of free cultural (especially arts and humanities) resources for education and research.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.library.duke.edu\/scholcomm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Scholarly Communications @ Duke<\/a> is blog with advice and news regarding copyright and publishing, from the Duke University Libraries.<\/p>\n<h2>Advocacy organizations<\/h2>\n<p>Remember to read the article on <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/12\/open-access-publishing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">open access<\/a> as a copyright alternative!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.districtdispatch.org\/category\/copyright\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALA District Dispatch<\/a> covers federal activity regarding copyright, and other ALA\u00a0lobbying efforts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Foundation for the Blind<\/a>\u00a0(AFB), like NFB, is another non-profit that supports people with vision impairments as well as works on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afb.org\/info\/programs-and-services\/public-policy-center\/12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public policy<\/a> that promotes equal rights and access.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defectivebydesign.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Defective by Design<\/a>, part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fsf.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Free Software Foundation<\/a>,\u00a0is one of the biggest and earliest non-profit organizations to work towards eliminating &#8220;DRM as a threat to innovation in media, the privacy of readers, and freedom for computer users.&#8221; Loads resources on DRM-free media, policy work, as well as open source and open access projects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalrighttorepair.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Digital Right to Repair<\/a> promotes consumers&#8217; rights to fix the goods they purchase, including jailbreaking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/everylibrary.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EveryLibrary<\/a>\u00a0is a national organization that supports\u00a0political action,\u00a0from local up to federal levels, that promote and expand library services \u2014 including bonds, tax bills, and related election movements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nfb.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Federation of\u00a0the Blind<\/a>\u00a0(NFB) has been a foremost not-for-profit advocate for making <a href=\"https:\/\/nfb.org\/kindle-books\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kindle content accessible to all<\/a>. They are also quite active in <a href=\"https:\/\/nfb.org\/laws-and-legislation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislative and regulatory areas<\/a> regarding universal access for persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Knowledge<\/a> works towards open access for the Internet, licensing, and telecommunications. It&#8217;s one of the largest public interest groups advocating copyright reform, net neutrality, patent reform, and so forth.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recreatecoalition.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Re:Create Coalition<\/a> is a group of organizations and individuals that provide tips and news regarding a more balanced approach to copyright. Re:Create also produces a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recreatecoalition.org\/media-center\/podcasts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">podcast<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recreatecoalition.org\/media-center\/infographics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infographics<\/a> to help educate and inform creators, librarians, educators, and consumers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/questioncopyright.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">QuestionCopyright<\/a>\u00a0is a non-profit that promotes the education and expansion of open distribution for cultural enrichment<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/readersbillofrights.info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Readers&#8217; Bill of Rights for Digital Books<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readersfirst.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> (<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/ReadersRights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readersfirst.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">) is supported by librarians and advocates against DRM.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.readersfirst.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Readers First<\/a>\u00a0advocates better ebook access and user experience for libraries and their patrons.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last modified\u00a016 February 2018.
