Quirk, 26 February 2016) clearly outlines relevant laws, misconceptions, and resources for teaching youth about fair use.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/10-things-everyone-gets-wrong-about-intellectual-proper-1679011301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 This Everyone Gets Wrong About Intellectual Property Law<\/a> (L. Davis, 15 January 2015) is a clear, gentle introduction to copyright, trademarks, and patents. Something for yourself, your colleagues, your users, and your students. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h2>Continuing education for LIS professionals<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/pp\/pub\/copytalk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CopyTalk Webinars<\/a> are offered for free by ALA and also recorded for later viewing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/copyx.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CopyrightX<\/a>, a 12-week MOOC periodically offered through Harvard Law School.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/online.duke.edu\/projects\/copyright-educators-librarians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyright for Educators and Librarians<\/a> is a free MOOC offered through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/learn\/copyright-for-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coursera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Not so much educational, as ethical and relevant to librarianship (since intellectual freedom includes fair usage!), ALA provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/intfreedom\/librarybill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Library Bill of Rights<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Librarian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/proethics\/codeofethics\/codeethics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Code of Ethics<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/intfreedom\/statementspols\/corevalues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Core Values of Librarianship<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/intfreedom\/statementspols\/freedomreadstatement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freedom to Read Statement<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Educational resources for librarians &amp; instructors<\/h2>\n<p>These resources are for librarians and teachers who guide students and users towards better information literacy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cmsimpact.org\/fair-use\/best-practices\/code-best-practices-fair-use-scholarly-research-communication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CMSI&#8217;s teaching materials<\/a> for fair use in media literacy, documentaries, journalism, and visual arts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/educators\/scope-and-sequence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Common Sense Media<\/a> offers a digital literacy and citizenship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/uploads\/classroom_curriculum\/commonsense_digitalcitizenshipcurriculum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curriculum (PDF)<\/a> for K-12.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/advocacy\/copyright\/copyright101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Copyright 101 Educational Materials<\/a> from ALA.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006\u00a0CSPD produced the comic <a href=\"https:\/\/web.law.duke.edu\/cspd\/comics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bound By Law<\/em><\/a>, available for free (<a href=\"https:\/\/consumermediallc.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/02\/cspdcomicscreen.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PDF<\/a>) and in multiple languages.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Smooth produces a 12-week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sPwJ0obJya0&amp;list=PL8dPuuaLjXtM6jSpzb5gMNsx9kdmqBfmY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">webseries on media literacy<\/a> (2018), which is hosted on the Green Brothers Crash Course YouTube channel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.knowyourcopyrights.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Know Your Copy Rights<\/a> supports outreach and education of students, patrons, and users of information technologies regarding fair use.<\/p>\n<p>University of Rhode Islands&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/mediaeducationlab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Media Education Lab<\/a>\u00a0provides &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/mediaeducationlab.com\/curriculum\/materials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multimedia curriculum resources<\/a> for K-12 media literacy education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/namle.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association for Media Literacy Education<\/a> (NAMLE), started by educators and humanities academics, promotes information literacy in the digital world. NAMLE offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/namle.net\/category\/resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Resource Hub<\/a> consisting of articles, news, and events.<\/p>\n<p>QuestionCopyright offers both <a href=\"http:\/\/questioncopyright.org\/learn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">educational articles<\/a> as well as a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/questioncopyright.org\/minute_memes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minute Memes<\/a> \u2014 short videos on copyright restriction and open access.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachingcopyright.org\/curriculum\/hs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Teaching Copyright<\/a> curriculum designed by EFF, with teens as the target audience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last modified 22 February\u00a02018.
