Available in multiple formats in text, audio, and video.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/questioncopyright.org\/promise\" target=\"_blank\">The Surprising History of Copyright and The Promise of a Post-Copyright World<\/a>, by Karl Fogel (2006), describes how the history of copyright is really a story of control, monopolies, and censorship \u2014 rather than protecting the works of creators.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arl.org\/focus-areas\/copyright-ip\/2486-copyright-timeline#.VkUy1ISsn4R\" target=\"_blank\">A History of Copyright in the United States<\/a>, assembled by members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), ranging from the 18th century to 2014.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/worldhistorysite.com\/culttech.html\" target=\"_blank\">Some Dates in the History of Cultural Technologies<\/a> from around the world (circa 33rd century BC to 2008), including printing, photography, and other media, along with various intellectual property laws.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifla.org\/copyright-tlib\" target=\"_blank\">Copyright Limitations and Exceptions for Libraries &amp; Archives<\/a>, outlined by the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), provides\u00a0a global look at copyright.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wipo.int\/edocs\/pubdocs\/en\/intproperty\/856\/wipo_pub_856.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Intellectual Property on the Internet: A Survey of Issues<\/a> (December 2002), conducted by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is a bit dated since it&#8217;s not been repeated by WIPO \u2014 but still has some interesting global data on copyright.<\/p>\n<h2>Government resources<\/h2>\n<p>The articles on <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/12\/how-to-determine-copyright-public-domain-status\/\" target=\"_blank\">copyright status<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/12\/how-to-determine-fair-use\/\" target=\"_blank\">fair use<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/lis.iwaruna.com\/copyright-toolkit\/2015\/11\/16\/media-dmca-drm\/\" target=\"_blank\">DMCA\/DRM<\/a> dive deeper into those respective issues, but here are useful references for copyright laws and recent rulings.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright law in the United States is codified under <a href=\"http:\/\/copyright.gov\/title17\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Code Title 17<\/a> \u2014 often simply called <strong>Title 17<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chafee Amendment<\/strong>, a.k.a., <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/title17\/92chap1.html#121\" target=\"_blank\">Section 121 of Title 17<\/a>, provides exemptions for persons with disabilities, notably those with print disabilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/legislation\/dmca.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) of 1998<\/a>\u00a0(PDF) outlines copyright protection for electronic\u00a0and online media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TEACH Act of 2001<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/docs\/regstat062701.html\" target=\"_blank\">House<\/a> &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copyright.gov\/docs\/regstat031301.html\" target=\"_blank\">Senate<\/a> bills for Technology, Education, and Copyright Harmonization) outlines copyright and fair use for\u00a0educational contexts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last modified 12 November 2015.
